Prof. Sofri Akatagba is a professor of Sociology with the University of Port Harcourt and currently serves as the Ag. Director, Centre for Advanced Social Sciences, University of Port Harcourt. He hails from Opobo kingdom and serves as an elder statesman in the kingdom’s traditional council. He has no doubt carved a niche for himself over the years as a professional in the field of Sociology and human behaviour. He also serves as a motivational speaker and a mentor to the younger generation around his sphere of influence. His hard work, dedication and diligence to work have seen him earn the respect of many within and outside his work space. His in-depth knowledge of his profession and his scholarly approach have helped him on several occasion maintain peace and draw attention to the plight of the Niger Delta struggle.
Prof. Sofri Akatagba continues to promote education as a veritable tool for improving one’s life and has promoted this belief in his home community and kingdom. He has encouraged several youths within his sphere of influence and has made personal sacrifices as well in supporting those who are determined to forge a path for themselves.
Prof. Sofri Akatagba has played key roles in the Niger Delta agitation for relevance in the scheme of things in Nigeria. After the execution of the Ogoni Nine by the General Sani Abacha’s administration, he drew quite a lot of attention to the issues plaguing the region through his writings. He also served in the technical committee of the Ijaw Youth Council where he drafted a technical report of the prevailing issues in the region.
Prof. Sofri Akatagba plans to continue in this struggle of shining light on the Niger Delta struggle with his recognition as a Niger Delta Peace Legend. He also intends to continue with his motivation towards the younger generation with his message for the need of mental resilience in the face of life’s challenges.
